Slide outs

Just wondering if anyone has had trouble with bolts shearing off on their slide outs. We have had our 829BHSS for two months now. Just 5 trips and the bolts sheared off on the slideout. Luckily it was at the house and I had all the tools to repair myself. The next time we went out, took the slide out and notice the bolts sheared again. This time the bolts did not come completely out and I was able to get back in easily. The trailer is at the dealer now getting repaired. Was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I am wondering if this is a problem this early what other problems will crop up? I hope I did not make a mistake with purchasing this brand.

Not sure if this is the same problem but I had the bolts pull out of the housing. I found the bolts were too short with only a scant amount of thread holding the halves together. I posted the ordeal here earlier if you want to search. Brand has nothing to do with it. The supplier of the part is the culprit.

I've not had that problem but, since you say the bolts sheared off, I wonder if they used the wrong grade of bolts in your trailer?

Bolts shearing off??!!?? jeez that sounds major.... If FR or the dealer can't help, get a hold of Lippert Systems (they manufacture most of the slideouts for FR. and I find their service people very helpful. I got the service manual for mine through them and it's great.

I notice that you are here in Kentucky! I had the same experience about two months ago when we were in PA. I replaced both bolts and when returned to KY had the dealer replace them with hardened bolts. I carry extrys just in case. What dealer replaced them?

That is the same dealer that we purchased from!! Was there this morning to get our slide cover replaced and a day-nite shade replaced. They had a 2008 1/2 flagstaff to come in this morning. Not too many changes. Great dealer to do business with!!

I have a flagstaff 8524 RLS. I've had the bolt shear also. I replaced it with same hardness bolt as it came with and lubed the gear cogs and rails of the slide out. Have operated it 8 times since with no problems. I did find that the square tubing that fit over the round shaft left some room for play on bolt, when I installed new bolt I tightened it up so square tube met shaft, seems to work so far.

I too have found this problem with my 8528RKSS Flagstaff 2006 unit. We were setting up a couple of weeks ago and just happened to look down and between the wheels and on the shaft off the motor which drives the slide out, what did I hind? It wasn’t a Jolly old man and 8 tiny reindeer. But a broken bolt half of it was still hanging there. I found a replacement bolt and fixed it. Then when we got home this week it was broken again so I replaced it with a stronger bolt. And like Darrell our tube had play in it. Then we tried it several times to make sure it would hold and so far its still hanging in there. Glad to see we weren’t the only ones having this problem.

Wink Adjusting the Slide

I have an 8298SS with the super slide. The cabinets touch at the top before the bottom does and it appears that the tilt on my slide needs to be adjusted. Has anyone done that, or do they know how?

I think the secret is to really snug the bolt tight to the shaft. The square shaft needs a lot of torque. I have not had any problems since this was done.

I have a 2008 Flagstaff 831bhss and have had the same thing happen. The dealer (in Arkansas) said to replace them with grade 8 bolts. Said they should be grade 8 from factory. I replaced them and still had breakage. Talked to dealer in Shreveport, LA and they said the bolts were the wrong . The shoulder of the bolt should extend completely through the 1" tube , no threads inside the tube. I have purchased new bolts but am waiting until the current bolts break to replace with longer shouldered bolt.
Hope this fixes the problem. Maybe it will help you to. Remember to get grade 8 bolts.

Mickey,
Have a look at what midnightpumpkin(John) came up with, on the slide-out drive shafts. Click here

O.K. After checking with lippert (who makes the slide out ) found you are NOT to lube rails and gear cogs (voids warranty)........Great to not have that info on purchasing unit. Found they stated to have "shoulder bolt" 1 1/2" long. Well I measured and you need unthreaded portion to reach through shaft/square tube area. I used a 1 3/4" which clears rotation of unit and puts all pressure on area not cut with threads. So far so good. Also check there website as they say to manually operate unit you must disconnect power or electrical feed back may damage motor, (voiding warranty) another thing you aren't made aware of when purchasing unit. Good luck.
