Trick I learned with store bought 5 gallon plastic water jug:

ALWAYS keep an eye out for the ones with the handle built into the bottle.

DO NOT THROW AWAY CAP when you open the bottle.

When you peel off the seal around the top, it almost always leaves a "tail" at the end to help the user get the cap off the bottle. Leave it on the cap.

Then, with an Exacto knife carefully cut out the center of the plastic cap. It is just the right size to insert a clear plastic vinyl hose about 18 - 24 inches long.

Then with the tip of the knife make a small air hole (no more than a 1/32 of an inch) between the vinyl hose and the edge of the cap. This is not "required" because air will bubble around the hose to get into the bottle, but the flow is MUCH faster with it. (and you don't have to hold that heavy bottle up so long)

I transfer the store bought water to 1 gallon clean milk jugs. We use only bottled water for coffee, cooking, and drinking.

We use the on board water tank for washing dishes and bathroom duty.
We just use the 5 gallon jug to tote water from the campground water source to the camper. At 5 gallons a trip, it takes just 6 circuits to the water pole to fill up our 30 gallon water tank when completely empty (but we never wait that long as we top off when it hits the 1/3 light - about
15 gallons - 3 trips).

When we need more bottled water its off to the home store and swap the bottle for a new one; transfer to the milk jugs and we are back in business.

Oh and make a cap thing for our neighbor who always wants one.
